Composer Theme Park

Introduction
You are a team of theme park designers assigned to build a new composer theme park called Composer Land in your city.  Composer Land will have different "Lands" for each of the following musical time periods in history:  Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic/Impressionistic, and Modern/Contemporary.  Each design team (4 members) must choose a Land to develop with composers of that time period, making it as realistic as possible.  Remember, the more authentic you make Composer Land, the more tourists you will attract!

The Task

Your team must decide on the composer(s) and time period you want to represent.  Your team will be responsible for researching, designing, and creating a blueprint or model of your section of the music theme park.  Things of interest to appear in your design should include:
  • Performing talent that looks and acts like the musical artists of your chosen time period
  • Musical selections from your chosen composer(s) to be used as background music throughout your Land
  • A restaurant or food stand that features the type of food that was a favorite during the musical time period of your choice
  • A souvenir shop that carries reproductions of musical instruments, recordings (tapes & CDs), and any other musical artifacts that were present during this time period
  • Theme park rides, games, and activities that creatively use musical terms and ideas involving persons or events related to your musical time period

The Process
Part 1:  Research on the Composers and Time Periods
  • Teacher will assign groups and choose team captains.
  • The group will choose a time period and a composer.
  • The teams will begin to research by reading articles, watching videos, and visiting websites.
  • The team will collectively complete a worksheet to collect facts for planning the theme park.

Part 2:  Planning the Theme Park  (The following tasks will be divided among you and your team members):

Artists
  • Choose musical artists to represent your composer and perform in your theme park
  • Design costumes for the performers that were present during the time period in which your composer lived

Music
  • Choose ten different musical selections to be used as background music throughout your theme park
  • Make sure that the music chosen relates to your composer and time period

Food
  • Plan a restaurant or food stand that features the type of food or drink that was a favorite during the time period that your composer lived
  •  Name your restaurant and design a menu
  •  Design costumes for the employees to wear

Shops
  • Plan a souvenir shop that carries reproductions of instruments that were used during your time period and musical recordings of your composer
  •  To represent your shop, create a catalog of the items that you will sell to send home with customers who would like to buy at a later time

Rides and Attractions
  • Develop park rides or activities that creatively use musical terms and ideas
  • Name your park attractions after musical terms, or titles of songs that your composer has written

Design
  • Create a blueprint or 3D model of your region of the theme park on poster board, paper, video, computer or any other creative method that you think of
  • Submit these ideas to your teacher before doing this to make sure that it meets his/her standards

Presentation
  • When all parts of the task are complete, plan a presentation to your class to convince them to fund this theme park
  • Consider using any media you have available, wearing costumes, role playing, etc.
  • Make it exciting and fun

Conclusion
I hope that this WebQuest has motivated you to become more excited to learn about different composers.  I also hope that it has helped you to become more familiar with the different time periods by bringing the characteristics to life in your own theme park.  Now that you have created your own theme park, how is the music in which we listen to a reflection of the times in which we live?  How do historical events influence composers and the music that they write?  Use the following links to learn more about composers, listen to their music or play games.
