The Seminole Nation

General Overview:
The Seminole Nation lived in Florida. Then they became involved in the Seminole War and got moved to Oklahoma. The first Seminole War was from 1817-18. The second was from 1835-42. The last war was from 1855-58. Those are the wars that moved them.

Food
Many people in the Seminole tribe liked sofk (a Seminole drink made of grits or roasted nuts) and fry bread. Most traditional cooking is done on special occasions.

Clothing
Certain pieces are always there. They discribe the outfit. They are always made the same way. But, there is space for a lot of personal preference in colors, in finishing touches, in accessories. Two fancy dancers side by side will both have roaches, double bustles, beaded yoke set, bells, and they still look very different. Two old style Seminole renactors will both have turbans, plumes, plain shirts, long shirts, moccasins, and sashes, and yet they can look completely different. There are "rules" that indicate what the parts of the outfit are, but there is also room for individual style.

Shelter
Chickee" is the word Seminoles use for "house." The first Seminoles who lived in North Florida built log cabin-type homes, some two stories tall.

Culture
Entertainment
A toy used by Seminole children was made of a stiff piece of birch bark cut into a triangular shape, with a hole in the center. To one corner of the bark triangle is attached a string, and a ball is attached to the other end of the string. The circular hole in the center of the bark triangle is made only slightly larger than the the ball attached to the string.Pepole a corner oftriangle opposite the string, toss the ball into the air, and the object of the game is to get the ball to drop through the hole in the bark.

Religion
Tribes of Indians in Oklahoma began to be Christianized mainly through the  Southern Baptist Convention, Home Mission Board as early as 1846. Baptist Churches came to the Oklahoma Creek and Oklahoma Seminole tribes in the 1870's.

Arts
Noah Billie, perhaps the most popular of Seminole painters, had a different style and a love of culture which is very obvious to anyone who views his works. Struck by illnesses with origins in Agent Orange-soaked Vietnam, Noah struggled to keep his strength while producing a good body of work, much of which is preserved in the Tribe's Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. He died in the early spring of 2000 at the age of 51, while his first large exhibit was being planned at the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

Family Life
Each Seminole Indian born of a Seminole mother is a member of her "Clan".  At the babies brith a strand of beads are but in their hair.  And after that a strand of beads are put in every year.  Today, the Seminoles and other Indian people, are having ceremonies on the occasion of the greening of the earth.  Seminole children were tucked into mosquito nets.
