| Lots of people don't know how the Sauk and the Fox tribes ended up in Illinois. The tribes were originally located in Wisconsin. The French and Chippewa started pushing the tribes south. Then the Sauk and Fox made an alliance. Most of the Sauk settled in Iowa, and few settled in Illinois. The two tribes got their names the "Sauk and Fox of the Mississippi" |

| The Fox and Sauk moved closer west to escape the Iroquois and Huron tribes who wanted their territory. They were originally from the northeast. In the early 1700's, these two tribes settled in Wisconsin and Detriot areas. They got into a conflict with the Ottawa Indians, which were allies with the French. In 1712 the Fox declared war on the Ottawa. The French helped the Ottawa to kill the Fox. For the next thirty years, the French, intend on destroying the Fox, and start war upon them. |

Food
The Sauk and Fox hunted buffalo in the
fall. This gave them food for the winter. When they had a big
feast to honor someone, they would eat dog meat.

Clothing
Most of the the indians didn't have much clothing to wear. The richest
people in the village would have more clothing, gold, or silver.

| Housing All of the houses were different sizes depending on the size of the family living in it. In other words, they had all sizes of homes. The people built their homes out of tree bark and wood. | ||

Life One of the
famous Indian wars was the Black Hawk War took place in Illinois. It started
when the Sauk and Fox's leaders were tricked into signing a treaty which
gave away all their lands on both sides of the Mississippi.
