The Cheyenne Nation

 
General Overview:  Cheyenne Indians traveled the great plains following the buffalo.
they had one of the most highly organized governments.

 
Food
     The Cheyenne Indians ate buffalo, fish, beans, corn, squash, deer, and rabbit.
Clothing
     The Cheyenne Indians used the buffalo to make most of their clothes such as moccasins, dresses, capes, shirts, and robes.

Shelter
     The Cheyenne indians lived in teepees. Teepees are log wooden posts covered with animal hide formed in the shape of a cylinder.
     The teepees had holes on the top for the smoke to go out.
     The teepees are moveable. They would take the hide off and take with them when they travel. 

 

Culture

Entertainment
     The Cheyenne Indians did many ritual dances Sacred Arrow Renewal, The Sun Dance, Massaum, and the Medicine Dance

Religion
     The Cheyenne Indians believe in the spirits of plants, animals, and people. Their gods name is Heammawihio. Heammawihio lived with the first and taught the Cheyenne people much that they know. 

Family Life
      The Cheyenne social structure is divided into family, kindred, and band. 
     The family structure consisting of father, mother, and children. 
     The kindred consists of family by marriage and extended family units. Taboos and rules strictly govern the different types of relationships between each member of this unit. These are to prevent inappropriate or destructive behaviors. 
     The final organizational unit within a tribe is a band. The bands are several kindred groups who, after the summer hunts break off from the tribe to cover larger areas for winter foraging. Often a leader of a band will be a Chief, but not always .
