The  Apache (Ndee) Nation

 
General Overview:
      The word Apache comes from a Yuma word that means "fighting men." It also comes from a Zani word meaning "enemy." The Apache are well known for their superior skills in warfare strategy and  endurance. There are six regional groups: The Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalers, Jicarilla, Lipan, and Kiowa Apache. b

 
Food
         The Apache Indians raised corn and hunted deer, gophers, wild turkeys, and lizards. They gathered cactus fruit and acorns.

Clothing
    The dress of the men were deer skin shirts, leggings, and moccasins. The Apache men were never without a loin-cloth. A deerskin cap with attractive ornaments was also worn. The women wore short deerskin skirts and high boot top moccasins.

Shelter
    The Apache's lived in houses called Wickiups. They were dome-shaped brush huts, erected by the women. They also lived in buffalo hide teepee's.

Culture
Entertainment
The Apache Indians had dances around their fires. The indian dancers used ankle wraps which were bells attached to a strap of leather. They also placed these around their knees, elbow's, or ankles.

Religion
Religion was a big part of Apache life. One of the best known natural beings were the Ga'ns. They were protective mountain spirits. 

Art
The Apache did bead making, pottery, and weaving. Women were good at basketry. 

Family Life
When married, Apache men usually lived with their wives and her parents. When the children were born they were strapped to their mothers' backs. The boys were trained for war from when they were young. They learned to hunt, stand guard, keep silent, and send and read smoke signals. The girls were trained by their mothers to do household chores.
