Introduction

The time has arrived, your first child has been born and you and your spouse/partner need to discuss discipline options.  You want to learn what your options are, their advantages and disadvantages, and decide which one will be the best for you as a parent and your child.  To accomplish the aforementioned task, you will be working as a co-parent or a single parent.  So, fasten your child safety seat, it is time to become educated on child discipline and it may be a bumpy ride!

The Task

Your task will be to:
  Explore parental discipline techniques
Choose what you feel is the most effective technique(s)
Explain why you have decided such.
Your final product will be presented in a slide show presentation or as a traditional poster to your teacher and prospective "parents"/classmates.

The Process

PHASE 1: DEFINING DISCIPLINE
The first step of this project will be to understand what discipline really is and why it is important in the life long job of parenting.  In order to do that, browse the sites below to come up with a thorough, yet individual definition.

PHASE 2:  DISCIPLINE EXPLORATION
This phase involves the actual exploration and explanation of five discipline options.  Upon completion of this phase, the information gained will be substantial and will be the basis for the final decision and rationale.  For each discipline option, outline and explain at least one advantage and one disadvantage.   Be sure to use your mind to think through the advantages and disadvantages.

Five Discipline Options:
1.  Redirecting a child's actions and behaviors

2.  Positive reinforcement for behavior

3.  Logical consequences

4.  Time out

5.  Spanking

PHASE 3:  APPLICATION
Phase three deals with applying information from phase two.  For each of the discipline options listed above, create a situation in which each could be used.  Explain the situation and explain how you, as a parent, would handle the situation using redirection, positive reinforcement, logical consequences, time out, or spanking.  So in this stage, there should be 5 unique (not copied from any sites) situations and each situation should be solved using one of the five discipline options.

PHASE 4:  ANALYSIS
The final phase of the project will be to study the newly acquired information on discipline and  make a decision on which technique or techniques you feel would be the most effective for you as a parent.  Be sure to include your reasoning so everyone can understand your thought process.  Upon completion of the analysis, each group will choose from a slide show presentation or a traditional poster to share their information with their class and teacher.

Evaluation
The final evaluation for this project will be in the form of a rubric.

Conclusion
This activity was designed to give you an idea as to the importance of disciplining a child, as well as exposing you to a variety of options.  As a parent, it is your job to guide your child(ren) and teach them what behavior would be expected of them in the world.  How you choose to do that will affect them in the present and future.  Parenting is a life-long job-- being educated and continually learning how to improve your skills is no different than any other job, and no less important.
